The Ancestry of a Slave - Literature Essay Samples

In Yaa Gyasi’s Homegoing, it shows how one person can go from living in bliss to living in a dungeon. But how could this happen you may ask. Slavery. The people would become enslaved after being taken from their families. â€Å"The Asante had power from capturing slaves. The Fante had protection from trading them† (Miller 1) The Asante would become wealthy after stealing the people from their lives. They would sell their â€Å"loot† to the British in return for money and to be revered throughout the other villages. They would get their power from making other terrified of being in their path. The Fante would sell their own people just so they wouldn’t get raided. If they got raided the whole village would become destroyed and many would be enslaved. At least if they gave them their own people, their own families it wouldn’t be as much of a loss, right? Esi was one of the characters that the novel essentially originated from. She and her long-lost sister against the cruel world of slavery. Her sister, Effia married a slaver (against her own will of course) and Esi, who actually got enslaved. I will tell the story of Esi, the half-sister born from a forgotten mother and warrior father. One day when her mother, Maame was cooking her father, Big Man told her that she should get a house girl. She didn’t want to but he made her, Esi and Maame then went to the square to choose a slave. Her name was Abronoma, she was horribly mistreated because she was bad at doing the chores. She was beaten with a switch anytime she would mess up and would be left with welts and scars often times bleeding. Once Big Man decided to give her a task, carry water on her head without spilling a single drop. She came so close but at the very end two measly drops spilt out and she was beaten for it! Big Man reached for his switch, and soon the song gained its accompaniment: the percussion of reed to flesh, the woodwind of reed to air. This time, Abronoma did not cry. (Esi 37) Why in the world would someone treat another being this way, it’s insane. Maame empathized with the girl and did her best to teach Esi to as well. She dreaded that her own daughter would talk so badly of the poor servant girl. One day when Little Dove told Esi a little of her own mothers past Esi was confused that something so horrible had happened to her mother and she didn’t know it. She wondered how her own mother could have been beaten and raped, how she could’ve been a slave too. This is why Maame hated when Little Dove was mistreated. She knew how it had felt to not be loved in her own â€Å"home†. The information Esi had learned about her mother made her only want more, but she wouldn’t just tell her she wanted to be bribed. Esi told her she would send word to Little Dove’s family saying that she was alive and where she was at. Later the raid started on their village, Abronoma’s father had come for her and he would enslave or ki ll anyone in his path. I wonder if Big Man would’ve done that for Esi or any of his other children. Maame then tells Esi of her sister that she had and gives her a necklace which is the same as the one Effia has. I wonder if Esi will spend lots of time thinking of her long-lost sister. I wonder if they will ever meet. Esi is then captured and enslaved in a dungeon. The smell was unbearable†¦a soldier came into the dungeon and began to speak. He had to gold his nose to keep from vomiting†¦The porridge passed right through her, it seemed. The ground was littered with their waste, the unbearable smell. (Esi 28-29) This dungeon is horrible, they can’t walk or talk hardly and they even have to sit in their own waste. It is not hygienic and they go hungry most days. How can someone be so cruel as to keep a group of people locked in this enclosure. It is made of mud and clay so they can’t possibly keep warm and they even stole Afua’s baby. They all must sit their naked and starving. And when they do get to eat they end up sitting in their own waste because it is so crowded that no one can move. Sometimes it’s so crowded that the women would be laying on top of each other crushing each with their own weight. (not that they would weigh that much after being starved though) He put her on a folded tarp, spread her legs, and entered her. She screamed, but he placed his hand over her lips, then put his fingers in her mouth. Biting them only seemed to please him†¦When he had finished, he looked horrified, disgusted with her. As though he were the one who had something taken from him. As though he were the one who had been violated. (Esi 48) In this room, they get beaten and raped whenever the soldiers feel like it. They are looked at like they are disgusting and are a burden when they were the ones that enslaved them in the first place. They have no respect for any of the women there whom were taken from their lives to become slaves. They just fuck them and throw them back in the dungeon again; sometimes whilst they are in the dungeon thrown against a wall, trapped between the crushing wall and the rapist. Part One: Topic and Discipline The focus of my research is on police brutality, specifically on the various components of excessive force and what aspects of American culture allow it to continue. This topic is multidisciplinary, and fits within the bounds of sociology, African American studies, criminal justice, law, and public policy. There are multiple factors which influence police brutality, including but not limited to, location, segregation, community accountability, demographics, and current events. The research used within this paper all attempt to answer one or more of the aforesaid factors. The ultimate goal of this paper is to determine the overall impacts of all aspects of police brutality. Police Use of Excessive Force in Minority Communities: A Test of the Minority Threat, Place, and Community Accountability Hypotheses is original research, as few analyses focus on the impact of place and urban segregation. The study was primarily data-based, making conclusions off of statistics pulled from the sustained excessive force complaints. The authors’ thesis is that coercive methods of policing are used against minorities, depending on multiple factors that are divided into hypotheses. The Minority Threat Hypothesis states that there is a positive relationship between coercive use of force and minority populations, with the amount of coercive force increasing as a minority’s population in a city does. This idea is psychological in nature, drawing from the idea that, due to implicit bias and criminal stereotypes, that minorities pose a greater threat against the officer than a white citizen. With greater segregation comes a greater perception of threat, especially if there is a higher crime rate in the more densely minority populated area. The Odyssey, Homers epic poem about the decades-long journey of Trojan War hero Odysseus, includes themes such as cunning vs. strength, coming of age, and order vs. disorder. These themes are conveyed with the use of a few key literary devices, including poems-within-a-poem and flashback narration. Cunning vs. Strength Unlike Achilles, the Iliad protagonist known for his physical strength and prowess in combat, Odysseus earns his victories through trickery and cunning. Odysseus’ cleverness is reinforced throughout the text by the use of epithets accompanying his name. These epithets and their translations include: Polymetis: of many counselsPolymekhanos: many-devicedPolytropos: of many waysPolyphron: many-minded The triumph of cunning over strength is a running theme in Odysseus’ journey. In Book XIV, he escapes the cyclops Polyphemus with his words rather than a traditional duel. In Book XIII, he disguises himself as a beggar in order to probe the faithfulness of the members of his court. When he listens to the bard Demodocus retell the end of the Trojan war and the building of the Trojan horse—his own invention in Book VIII—he weeps â€Å"like a woman,† realizing how dangerous his own cunning is. What’s more, Odysseus’ cunning is almost matched by the intelligence of his wife Penelope, who manages to remain loyal to Odysseus and stave off her suitors in his absence through trickery and cunning. Spiritual Growth and Coming of Age The first four books of The Odyssey, known as Telemacheia, follow Odysseus’ son Telemachus. Odysseus has been absent from Ithaca for two decades, and Telemachus sets out to uncover his father’s whereabouts. Telemachus is on the brink of manhood and has very little authority in his own household, as he is besieged by suitors seeking to marry his mother and rule over Ithaca. However, thanks to Athena, who teaches him how to behave among Greek leaders and takes him to visit Pylos and Sparta, Telemachus gains maturity and knowledge. Ultimately, he is able to serve as an ally to his father when it comes time to slay the suitors, a scene that demonstrates how much Telemachus has matured. Odysseus undergoes spiritual growth of his own, becoming less brash and more thoughtful over the course of his journey. At the start of his journey, Odysseus is brash, overconfident, and taunting, which results in numerous obstacles and delays. By the time he returns home, Odysseus has become more cautious and careful. Order vs. Disorder In The Odyssey, order and chaos are represented by the contrasting settings.   The island of Ithaca is orderly and â€Å"civilized†: inhabitants tend to animals and agriculture, engage in handiwork, and lead orderly lives. By contrast, in the worlds visited by Odysseus during his travels, plants grow freely and the inhabitants eat anything that they find. These worlds are depicted as obstacles to Odysseus journey, threatening prevent him from returning home, Consider the Lotus Eaters, who spend their days languorously eating lotus plants; the lotus plants cause a sleepy apathy that Odysseus and his crew have to escape. Another example is the cyclops Polyphemus. Polyphemus, who reaped the fruits of his island without labor, is depicted as one of Odysseus main antagonists. Poems Within a Poem The Odyssey features two bard-like characters, Phemius and Demodocus, whose roles offer insight into the ancient art of oral poetry and storytelling. Both Phemius and Demodocus tell their court audience stories tied to the heroic cycle. In Book I, Phemius sings of the ‘returns’ of other Trojan War heroes. In Book VIII, Demodocus sings about the disagreements of Odysseus and Achilles during the Trojan War, as well as the love affair of Ares and Aphrodite. The vocabulary used to describe the poetic practice suggests that it is a performative art intended for an audience of listeners and accompanied by a lyre. In addition, both bards took requests from their audience: â€Å"But come now, change thy theme,† Demodocus is asked in Book VIII. Such requests suggest that these poets had a wide repertory of tales to draw from. Flashback Narration The narration of The Odyssey begins with Telemachus’ journey. Then, the narrative moves back in time, as Odysseus recounts his journeys for the length of three entire books. Finally, the narrative moves forward in time to Odysseus return to Ithaca. The most notable flashback in the text is the multi-book tale recounted by Odysseus himself, but other sections feature flashbacks, as well. The poem utilizes flashbacks to describe events of the past in detail, including the end of the Trojan War and the return of other war heroes.

The financial loss is further to be enlarged by the large number of lawsuits filed against the company. However, the bold legal strategy that Merck took to fight every individual Vioxx law suit on a case by case basis is expected to dampen the effect of litigation.   Merck accepts to take the cost of one billion dollars in litigation fee rather than open the door for settlements which would be devastating with the entrance of thousands of new law suits. Merck hopes that the waiting game would cause many plaintiffs to back off. The reputation of Merck also sustained great damage. It is believed that Vioxx is responsible for some disastrous health outcomes. Merck is shown to care all about business with less integrity towards doing what’s right for its customers.   However, it is the reputation of Merck relative to other pharmaceutical company’s that really determines the extent of damage to Merck’s reputation. In reaction to the increasing economic and political pressures on Merck, Vagelos should have followed a combination of symbolic and human resource frame to better mobilize the company to sustain the encountered pressures. He should have built on the strong emotions and relationships between company employees who were developed during the company golden age 1992-1993. He also could have adhered to his alleged symbolic frame and created a symbol for the company to adhere to until hard times have passed through. Recommendation to Merck: It is recommended that Merck pursuit the development of new products to make up for the decrease in total sales that resulted from the recall of Vioxx. The company should also improve its reputation within the pharmaceutical industry through the involvement in a number of ethical activities to the community. Merck could re-establish its reputation by blaming the FDA for not recalling the drug after learning of Vioxx’s risks.
